2500-Meter Underground Reconstruction Completed

The reconstruction of the heating network as part of the Tram to Mistrzejowice project has been completed. All works were finished before the heating season began to avoid inconveniences for residents.

Gülermak, the company responsible for the Tram to Mistrzejowice project, completed the reconstruction of the heating network from Jana Pawła II Avenue to Rondo Młyńskie and the heating chambers at Bohomolca and Jancarza streets. Since the beginning of the tram line construction to Mistrzejowice, builders have modernized or rebuilt over 2500 meters of underground heating infrastructure.

The reconstruction works were carried out in stages. Due to the pipe welding technology used, each section had to be fully heated before backfilling the trench. Pipe welding is a process of joining pipes by heating their ends until they become plastic and then joining them to create a durable and tight joint. On Meissnera Street, it was necessary to weld two pipe segments with a total length of about 200 meters.

The smallest pipes used in the project had a diameter of just 150 mm, while the largest had a diameter of 1000 mm. These pipes were placed under sidewalks, bike paths, parking lots, and green areas. This arrangement not only facilitates access to the installation during repairs but also minimizes traffic disruptions during maintenance works. In case of repairs, it does not require disturbing the road surface, which minimizes traffic disruptions.

– A major challenge was to carry the pipes through the main street crossings. To minimize traffic disruptions, we created temporary crossings that ensured smooth traffic flow and allowed the continuation of works, – says Paweł Kos, sanitary works manager at Gülermak.

The reconstruction of the heating network was necessary due to conflicts with the diaphragm walls being built at the beginning of Meissnera Street and near Rondo Młyńskie, as well as due to its overlap with the planned tram line route. Additionally, modernization was necessary to adapt the underground networks to current technical standards and to provide residents with access to safe and durable infrastructure.

The works were carried out outside the heating season, which allowed avoiding interruptions in the supply of heat and hot water, – says Magdalena Nowak-Obrzut, Director of the Kraków City Roads Authority. Thanks to the cooperation with the network operator – the Municipal Heat Energy Company (MPEC) and our subcontractors, the works and inspections went smoothly and successfully, – emphasizes Paweł Kos.

Construction Site Report: August 2024

The construction of the 4.5-kilometer tram line to Mistrzejowice is ongoing, with recent weeks bringing further progress. In the new material, you will see how we use BIM technology in planning and monitoring construction works.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a technology used in the construction industry that helps in creating, managing, and analyzing information about buildings or infrastructure in a digital and 3D manner. You can read more about this in one of our articles: BIM Technology.

In the report, you will see how BIM technology affects the progress of the work and what innovative solutions are being implemented on the construction site. The material also presents details of the progress made in August.

We invite you to watch the video and follow the next stages of the construction of the tram line to Mistrzejowice.

Underground tram stops – “Rondo Młyńskie” and “Rondo Polsadu”

Part of the new tram line to Mistrzejowice will run below ground level. On the route with a total length of over 1.2 km, passengers will find two underground stops – “Rondo Młyńskie” and “Rondo Polsadu”.

Going in the direction of Mistrzejowice, the tram will go underground just before the Młyńskie roundabout, it will cross it in a half-open trench, it will stop at the recessed “Rondo Młyńskie” stop, and before the Polsad roundabout it will enter a tunnel where the underground stop “Rondo Polsad” will be located. It will emerge to the surface before the Barei roundabout and continue towards Mistrzejowice on the surface.

Key figures:

  • The total length of the tunnel section will be 1230 m.
  • The largest difference in the level of the rail head in relation to the terrain will be approx. 12 m
  • The height in the tunnel, after deducting the space for the overhead contact line, will be 4.5 m.
  • The length of each underground platform will be 65 m.
  • The width of the underground platforms will be 4.5 m

The underground stops in the area of the Młyńskie roundabout and the Polsadu roundabout will be accessible by fixed and escalators, as well as elevators. In the underground spaces, platforms and places for getting on and off are planned, adapted for people with disabilities, including textured surface markings and tactile markings in the Braille language.

A visual information system in the form of suspended direction and information boards will be installed within all underground stops, enabling efficient movement of passengers in selected directions of travel.

In addition, the underground station at the Polsadu roundabout will be equipped with public toilets, including a separate toilet adapted to the needs of people with disabilities. A room for caregivers with children is also planned, equipped with a changing table and a feeding space.

The second month of work is behind us

The construction of the tramway to Mistrzejowice is making significant progress. The project site is now being prepared for the foundational work. So, what progress has been achieved in the second month since the work began?

Throughout August, our efforts were focused on site preparation. To ensure a smooth construction process, we began by clearing trees that would have obstructed the future tramway and the reconstruction of underground networks. This tree clearance took place on Meissnera Street, Pilotów Street, Młyńska Street, Lublańska Street (east side), Dobrego Pasterza Street, Krzesławicka Street, Bohomolca Street and Jancarza Street.

Furthermore, we successfully demolished the existing earthen embankment on Krzesławicka Street and initiated the construction of retaining walls. Additionally, we took down several buildings situated on Dobrego Pasterza Street and dismantled an overhead power line, along with its supporting poles. We also cleared away any remaining remnants of previously removed billboards.

The reconstruction of the water mains on the southeast side of the Polsadu Roundabout and along Młyńska Street in the Castorama area is currently ongoing. To serve you better, a container construction office has been established near the Barei Roundabout. An information desk will be set up here soon, where the Contractor’s staff will provide updates on the project, ongoing work, and any traffic disruptions.

So, what can you expect in the coming weeks?

In September, we will commence the reconstruction of the sewer network near the Polsadu Roundabout. Simultaneously, preparations for the working platforms necessary for the construction of slurry walls in this area will begin.

Additionally, we anticipate the removal of trees that have been preserved due to active bird nests or pending analysis, for instance, in the vicinity of Lublańska Street (west side) and Meissnera (near Pszona Street).

Lastly, please note that you have until the end of this month to register for the building inventory within close proximity to the project. If your housing cooperative or property manager doesn’t handle applications, you can express your interest in participating by sending an email to info@tramwajdomistrzejowic.pl. Be sure to include your precise address and telephone number in the message.
